Koh Tao has many great spots for snorkeling. Some of these places can be reached by walking/taxi/motorbike, but for some you need to hire a taxi boat. Hiring the snorkel equipment can be done from many of the beaches, from dive schools (if you are also diving with them), or some of the taxi boats will supply them. Please watch out for taxi boats when snorkeling or swimming as they can be very dangerous if they get too close. Another thing to remember when snorkeling on Koh Tao is that many places will not supply fins for snorkel trips. This is because snorkelers who wear fins are more likely to kick and damage the reef, so please do not wear fins when snorkeling!
Mango Bay is a beautiful place for snorkeling. To get here you will have to take a taxi boat as the road to Mango Bay is very steep and not in the best condition. As mango Bay is very shallow, secluded, and very big (not the beach but the area for snorkeling), it is one of the best places to go. Don’t miss out on having a drink at the restaurant (amazing views) and visiting the new Butterfly sanctuary.
Shark Bay is the highlight of any snorkel trip as you have the chance to see Blacktip reef sharks up close and personal. These small reef sharks (which measure between 50cm – 1.4m) are amazing to see and stay very shallow in the bay. You can reach Shark Bay easily by taxi or motorbike. You also have a chance of seeing turtles here to, so enjoy the Koh Tao shark experience.
Koh Nangyuan is a seperate island from Koh Tao, but is only a 10mins taxi boat journey away. It is a stunning island which is featured in many postcards of Thailand. The island has accommodation, a restaurant, the first ever island to island zip-line (contact www.gtadventures.com for info), and some great view points. As for the snorkeling, the best place to go on Koh Nangyuan is Japanese Gardens.
Located at the south of Koh Tao, easily reached by taxi or taxi boat, Aow Leuk is a beautiful beach to spend some time. With coral on both sides of the bay and sand in the middle, this bay is not only perfect for snorkeling but also swimming too. This is one of my favourite place to relax.
Tanote Bay is a remote beach located on the east of the island best reached by 4×4 Taxi or taxi boat. This is one of the bigger beaches on the island and due to it’s location is nice and quiet. This is the place to go if you want to do some snorkeling without worrying about seeing many other people.
