What a better place to party than at the beach with thousands of up for it revellers? And what if the party goes on all night long? Well, that is what the famous full moon party is all about. It takes place every month on the beautiful island of Koh Phangan on Haad Rin beach on the south-eastern side of the island.
On arrival you will encounter loads of vendors selling all sorts of full moon gear such as glow sticks, luminous paint, fluorescent vests and shorts and of course the notorious Thai Buckets, filled with the spirit of choice and the strongest concentrated Red Bull in the world!
Most people opt to paint themselves or use the local artists to draw great designs on them. If you don’t you will be a target for some dodgy designs by your friends!
Most of the action happens on the beach but there are some very cool bars with their own special vibe, some even offering free food, one of our favorites is Fubar, good music and a good spread of food. We usually use this as our base, try it!
You will find yourself walking from one end of the beach to the other just enjoying the crazy crowd and the various sets playing, there is a type of music to suit most tastes. Drum and Bass, Old Skool jungle, Dubstep, German techno, Trance, House, Psytrance to name but a few! No R&B or Rap thankfully!
So the purpose of this Full Moon Party? To meet new people and party hard till the sun rises. Its a good idea to bring sunnies as there is nothing worse than still being up for dancing and the sun beats in on your tired eyes! Someone will thank me one day for this! There are many backyard parties that start and its easy to go on for the whole next day, this is the true full moon experience!
Another good tip is to have a base bar or meeting point as its very easy to lose your group of friends and there is nothing worse than walking around 20000 or more people looking for your mates.
Another handy tip is to wear shoes or at least flip flops and not go barefoot. There will always be things dropped on the beach, glass etc so so try avoid getting cut.
Every Full Moon I have been to has been an epic experience, always loads of dancing, funny stories and great characters to observe, great variety of music and of course friends made for life after partying with them for 10 or more hours.
One of my favorite things is the relaxing journey back to Koh Tao, knowing that the mayhem is over and that most of the people are heading over to learn to dive. The two must do things in the gulf of Thailand, getting your Full Moon wings and your Open Water qualification
