After travelling to many amazing places in Thailand, I have found Koh Tao has one of the best selections of restaurants out of everywhere I have visited. When people come to the island, they are always surprised by the variety and quality of  the food available here. If you want good Thai food (Tong Thai, Krua Thai, Tik, Nids – all located in Sairee), Pizza & Pasta (Porta Bello, Ferango – located in Sairee), Sea Food (Barracuda – located in Sairee), Western Food (Hippo, Choppers Bar, Fizz Bar – located in Sairee), or Sandwiches (Zanzibar, Through the Looking Glass – located in Sairee) there are many great places here for you.

However, I want to show you a few of the places you HAVE to go to, or might miss as they are off the beaten track.

#1 – The Whitening

The Whitening

The Whitening

Located on the beach in Mae Haad, this well established restaurant has a large menu including Thai and pasta dishes. As a lot of people stay on Sairee Beach, it’s not the easiest of places to find and most people never see it. Everything in the restaurant is white and is best experienced at night when the lights are turned on (see picture above). The food is outstanding, as are the cocktails…….don’t miss it! (call 077456199 to book or email whiteningclub@hotmail.com)

#2 – Lung Pae

Lung Pae steak

Lung Pae truly is ‘off the beaten track’, but all the locals know if you want an amazing steak in a fantastic location, this is the place to be. It’s located up in the jungle with stunning views overlooking Chalok Ban Kao. As it is in a remote location, the restaurant provides a free taxi service to pick you up and drop you off after (call – 077457090 to book)

#3 – Mint Kitchen

Mint Kitchen

Here at Roctopus Dive, we are the luckiest divers in the world to have Mint Kitchen joined onto the side of our dive shop. They don’t do good Thai food………..they do the best Thai food on the island!!! They have a very large menu with western food on as well, but people come here for the friendly atmosphere and the authentic Thai food. (if you’re interested in doing a Thai cooking course call- 077456611)

#4 – Golden 99

Golden 99

Golden 99

Golden 99 is a great place to eat if you’re in a group of people as it’s a sociable eating event. It’s a Korean BBQ restaurant located on the way to Chalok Ban Kao (another place not easily stumbled upon), and is an “all you can eat” buffet all for 139 THB (used to be 99 THB, hence the name Golden 99). There are fried rice, noodles, sushi, and other snacks for you to choose from, then it’s up to you to cook the meat and soup. Great fun and you will leave with a fully belly for sure!

#5 – Chinese Noodle Soup

Pork Noodle Soup

Pork Noodle Soup

Do you want to try the best noodle soup on the island? If so, you need to find this tiny place. It’s located on the ‘up’ road in Mae Haad, near the top next to Thai Art (the best tattoo shop on the island). This small restaurant is missed by 99.9% of people who visit Koh Tao which is a shame. If  you go in here and ask for the Chinese Noodle Soup, you will never be dissapointed. It contains four different kinds of pork (on the bone, wontons, sliced, and chunks), vegetables, and noodles (call – 0862706898 if you can’t find it)
